It’s a popular locker room slang that has been viewed by many as an urban myth.
But scientists have found that some men actually fall into two categories when it comes to their penis size – “waxers” and “dowers”.
The terms are used to define those who have large flaccid penises – douches – and those whose limbs are naturally less impressive but grow significantly larger when erect – growers.
Spanish researchers have now come up with a scientific definition of which group men fall into. It comes after a study found that the average penis length has increased by 25 percent over the past few decades.
Scientists have established precise definitions of what is a grower and what is a douche. They found that a man whose flaccid penis grows 56 percent more when he gets an erection is a grower. If it grows 31 percent or less, then it’s a shower. However, about half of the males fall somewhere in between and are neither growers nor showerers
The Spanish research team found that men whose penises grow by more than 56 percent are “growing” from erection to erection, while those who are getting longer by 31 percent or less are “showers.”
The average penis grows by 42 percent when going from flaccid to erect, with the majority of men falling in the gray area between the two categories.
Overall, 24 percent of males are breeders while 25 percent are douches. The remaining 51 percent of men fall into neither category.
dr Manuel Alonso Isa, a urologist who led the research, told DailyMail.com: “Our study attempted to provide explanations for different types of penis hardening.
“The purpose of our study is to provide information to our patients [length and growth] Expectations before deciding to have surgery.”
He said many men worry about their penis size and hopes these results will help doctors reassure them that they are fine.
“As a urologist, we treat a lot of patients who are concerned about their size…they want lengthening,” he explained.
Penis enlargement surgeries have seen an upward trend in recent years, with anecdotal reports of increasing demand popping up across America.
The most common type of penis enlargement is ligamentolysis, in which a ligament connecting your penis to the skeleton is severed, causing your member to hang lower.
Other procedures use fat from the stomach or even fillers to enlarge the penis.
However, these procedures are not without risk. They can sometimes lead to erectile dysfunction or loss of sensation in the penis.
In cases where the operation is unsuccessful, there may even be a strange bending or angling of the genitals.
dr Alonso Isa hopes that many men who have a grower – a penis that is small but flaccid but expands greatly when erect – will see the concept that is now well established in science and become more comfortable with its length feel.
For the research, which will be presented at the European Association of Urology Congress in Milan, Italy, the team led by Drs. Alonso Isa Data from 225 men.
Each of them was measured in flaccid and erect penis length and girth.
They were given a prostaglandin injection, which was used to give a person an erection to treat erectile dysfunction.
The researchers then compared flaccid and erect penis lengths for each participant.
The average penis in the study was 4.2 inches long. When erect it was 5.7 inches. A typical man’s penis grows about 42 percent when he achieves an erection.
dr Alonso Isa added that whether a person is a grower, showers, or is somewhere in the middle doesn’t affect overall penile health or fertility.
“We didn’t see any factors that predict health effects,” he said.
But many men who worry about their member’s size have psychological health implications, he said.
“I think for mental health it’s smart [doctors] Advising people that their penis is normal [no matter if it is a grower or shower].’
He said further research on the subject should look at whether there are genetic — or other predeterminative factors — as to whether a person is a breeder or a shower.
